AWARD WINNING AUTHOR ANNA FUNDER ENDORSES ABCA

Anna Funder is the author of All That I Am and Stasiland. Anna has won many awards for her writing including the Miles Franklin Prize and the BBC Four Samuel Johnson Prize. Anna has provided the following endorsement for the work of ABCA:

I am honoured to support the work of Australian Books for Children of Africa. ABCA does wonderful work making books available to children in African countries where books are scarce or too expensive. Working with committed African educators, ABCA distributes fiction and non-fiction books sourced in Australia to schools in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria and Ghana.

I am passionate about promoting literacy in Africa and have a special interest in girls’ literacy.  I share ABCA’s belief that it is through education that African children living in poverty will be equipped to change the circumstances of their lives and their countries. But as well as changing the future, to read is an instant enrichment of one’s present life.

I love that in Australia ABCA teaches school students about the situation of their African counterparts and then empowers them to do something to help, showing kids that you don’t have to be rich or even grown up to make a difference. I particularly like the ABCA initiative where young Australian students donate their favourite books with a letter attached explaining to African students why that book is special to them. The beginning of a global book club perhaps? At any rate, the world of literature -  of ideas, inspiration and intellect -  should know no boundaries, and ABCA is showing us how.
