The Family Literacy Project
The Family Literacy Project, Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal operates five libraries with 7,571 books borrowed in 2021. On 6 June 2022, 300 ABCA books were picked up and distributed amongst the various libraries, reading nooks and box libraries
The project seeks to encourage parents and child minders to read to and with children and people who can read, to read to their neighbours.
Dear Anthony, Anne, Sue and Steve,
It was really delightful to meet you all on Monday and enjoy one of Anne’s delicious teas together. Thank you so much for accommodating our difficult time of arrival.
We are so thrilled with the beautiful books that the Westville Rotary Club organized for us. Please extend our gratitude to your Australian counterparts.
On her way home, Phumy called at two of our sites – one with a formal library, and one with a Box Library. She sent you the photos and you saw how happy those books made the children. It is also very exciting for our facilitators and library assistants to have new stories to read to the children and new things to talk about. I could not believe the beautiful condition of the books. We all know what a personal ‘lift’ we get when presented with something new and shiny, and generally speaking the children’s little lives are full of ‘drab and dusty’.
As a literacy organization we are doing everything in our power to improve the reading levels in our area and, we believe that our new isiZulu Reach Out to Read programme has the potential to raise the levels in the whole country. It is a difficult journey though, and we really appreciate your support.
Yours sincerely,
Jill Frow
